NXT Champion Bobby Roode vs. Drew McIntyre

The undefeated Drew McIntyre has decimated every opponent thrown his way, and at TakeOver: Brooklyn III, the Scottish Superstar will finally get what he’s been in search of: The opportunity to challenge NXT Champion Bobby Roode.

McIntyre has maintained a laser focus on NXT’s top prize since he signed with the brand in April. He earned the title match the old-fashion way, piling up one win after another. With a smash-mouth style, he conquered the likes of Oney Lorcan, Andrade Almas and Killian Dain. McIntyre’s win over The Beast of Belfast secured an opportunity to face Roode as well as snapped Dain’s own undefeated streak.

With such an impressive resume, McIntyre might rightly be considered Roode’s most dangerous challenger to date. However, don’t expect The Glorious One to be intimidated. The resourceful and calculating veteran champion has consistently found ways to keep hold of the NXT Title against the stiffest competition. McIntyre says it’s no longer “Bobby Roode’s NXT,” but Roode will stop at nothing to prove otherwise.

Will Drew McIntyre complete his mission in Brooklyn, or will The Glorious One continue his era atop NXT? Don’t miss this summer’s biggest NXT Championship Match when TakeOver: Brooklyn III streams live on the award-winning WWE Network on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 8 ET/5 PT.

Drew McIntyre vs. Killian Dain

The winner gets the title shot against Roode at Takeover: Brooklyn. Dain can’t intimidate him to start and gets taken down by a top rope shot to the head. Killian is right back with a basement crossbody to send Drew outside though and we take a break.

Back with Drew still in trouble and getting tossed hard into the corner. Dain stomps on the chest and drops a running elbow for two. Some hard crossface shots to the jaw have Drew in trouble. We hit the neck crank for a bit before Dain hammers away in the corner, only to get caught in a running powerbomb to give Drew a near fall of his own.

White Noise gets two more, only to have Dain hit a quick Wasteland into a backsplash into a Vader Bomb (collectively named the Belfast Blitz). The Ulster Plantation is broken up and the referee tells them they have two minutes left. Dain takes him up again and grabs a fisherman’s superplex for a delayed two but walks into Future Shock for one. Drew’s shocked face is great and it’s even worse when the Claymore (running boot to the face) isn’t even enough for a cover. A second Claymore sends Drew to Brooklyn at 13:35.

Winner: Drew McIntyre

Drew says he’s coming for the title to end the show.

Backstage, McIntyre gets some interview time and he’s asked about tonight’s title match. He says next time they talk, they’ll be talking about his title match. He runs down the list of former nXt champions and he wants to join that lineage.

Drew McIntyre vs. Sean Maluta

Drew takes a knee in his corner, staring down his competition. He and Maluta grapple until the referee breaks them up and Drew gestures towards the centre of the ring. Maluta slowly walks there and they continue grappling into the opposite corner where the ref breaks it up again. Crosschops by McIntyre. Maluta hits back but McIntyre hits harder, knocking Maluta to the ground twice. He’s man-handling this guy.

McIntyre with a suplex slam showing off incredible strength. Irish whip to the corner. Gets a boot to the face. Maluta leaps to the top rope, launches himself and hits a Codebreaker of sorts on McIntyre for a 1 count. Right hands by Maluta, followed by a flying forearm in the corner. McIntyre reverses the whip and kicks Maluta as he springs up, right in the chin. Ouch.

McIntyre’s breathing deeply and he unloads right hands on Maluta. Up to the top rope, elbow to the head of Maluta, dropping him to the mat. Maluta’s got some fight left in him but McIntyre headbutts him in the face…and he’s bleeding from underneath the right eye. He charges up and nails Maluta with his running front kick (Claymore) to the face. Pinfall is successful.

Winner: Drew McIntyre

Post-match, McIntyre’s interviewed on the ramp. He’s not concerned with Wesley Blake, but if Blake wants a little attention, he can get in the ring next week. Sounds like a challenge to me.

Drew McIntyre reveals what bothers him about NXT

Since returning to WWE, Drew McIntyre hasn’t exactly been shy about voicing his opinion, whether it’s expressing his desire to challenge for the NXT Championship or his intention to help NXT grow as a brand.

That outspokenness even extends to talking about what he doesn’t like about NXT.

During a recent Facebook Live interview with Kayla Braxton, the Scottish Superstar — who was in Riverside, Calif., for his first NXT Live tour since making his WWE return last month — revealed what he would like to change about the black-and-yellow brand.

“The way I see it, I need people to stop thinking of it as ‘moving up,’” McIntyre said of instances when a Superstar moves from NXT to Raw or SmackDown LIVE. “That’s the only thing I see with the roster and perhaps the fans is the perception that moving a brand is moving up. I don’t see it that way. These people are so, so talented.”

The Scottish Superstar touched on a number of other topics beyond making NXT an equal to Raw and SmackDown LIVE, from naming NXT’s hardest hitters (Oney Lorcan, Aleister Black and Roderick Strong all received shout-outs) to speaking about the reception he’s received since signing with NXT.

You can watch the entire interview below, and keep an eye peeled for future Facebook Live interviews on NXT’s official Facebook page.
